Roadworks Update: Sunday 22nd June

lagan1Here’s the latest on works today, Sunday, sent to Radio Scilly by Lagan Construction:

The coaster which is being used to convey aggregates for both these projects, the MV River Trader, was due to arrive in St Mary’s at 8.30am on Sunday 22nd June. In light of observations received from some of the affected parties on the route we have requested permission to off-load this consignment during the day on Sunday.

This has been granted subject to a number of provisos:-

  • Haulage of materials not to start before 11 am
  • Tractors to drive especially slowly on the quay and Hugh Street, the Strand and Lower Strand – moderate speeds and a high level of vigilance elsewhere.
  • There will be a close down period between 4 pm and 6 pm when the tripper boats bring their passengers back from the off islands
  • Additional traffic / passenger control personnel to be deployed.
  • The only day for daytime hauling will be this Sunday.

In the initial stages 7 tractors and trailers will be operating and they will run in 3 pairs and 1 single unit to try to minimise disturbance. A break between 2pm and 2.30 pm may be taken if there is congestion of the quay – all movements are made on the advice / instruction of the Harbour Master. Two excavators will be used to off load the cargo.

The route will be the same as on previous occasions and starts at the Quay, via Hugh Street, Church Street, the Old School, Telegraph Road, Parting Carn Farm and to the site. The return journey will be the same with the empty trailers passing along the Strand rather than Church Street.

Equipment was mobilised to the quay on Saturday evening to avoid disturbance early on Sunday morning.

With the late start and the breaks during the day the operation may continue some time into the evening. How long is hard to predict and will depend on progress.

Lagan Construction Ltd sincerely apologises for any disturbance this essential operation causes and please contact Lagan on 07825 167569 if there are any problems during this work.
