Theatre Club Summer Play Starts This Evening

The Director of this summer’s Theatre Club play, which starts it’s run this evening, says he’s delighted how far the drama group have come in such a short time. Back in March, they didn’t have a cast, or even a play!

Kevin Leeman was speaking after a successful dress rehearsal on Sunday for ‘Merely Players’ – a murder-mystery-comedy set in a theatre.

Kevin says the performance was a last chance for the cast to “shake out the details” in front of a small audience, made up of about a dozen close friends and relatives of Theatre Club members.

That’s enough to give them the “adrenaline rush” they need, says Kevin, knowing they’re being watched, but also providing positive feedback from people who know what can and can’t be changed at the last minute.

And Kevin says he’s very happy, given where they were in earlier this year.

Kevin Leeman talks about the forthcoming performance of Merely Players

He says it’s always difficult choosing a play with the limited resources available in Scilly. You never know whether it’s going to work for you until the very late stages, he says.

But they’ve had a committed cast and regular rehearsals, which have brought everything together in a very short time.

This year’s cast has a few inexperienced members, says Kevin, and they’ve had to work hard to learn lines and overcome first-time nerves. But he says hopefully they’ll be back for more and encourage other people to give it a go in the future.

There are 16 performances booked into the Town Hall, starting this evening at 8pm, and running to the beginning of September. Tickets are available on the door.
