Tresco Garden Expert Helping Replant Porthcressa

porthcressa flowersScilly’s gardening guru has been helping add colour to a high profile part of Hugh Town.

Tresco Abbey Gardens’ curator Mike Nelhams has been advising on what to replant on Porthcressa seafront.

And last Friday the team of seven from Tresco Estate and the Council planted a selection of summer plants including daisies, gazanias and pelargoniums to add yellow, white and pink shades to the bank and the bed besides the toilet entrances.

When the Council redevelopment scheme was completed last year there was some criticism over the plants chosen.

At the time Mike said he was disappointed not to have his offer taken up to choose plants that were best suited to the winds and sea spray. The plants had little chance of survival following the violent storms, which hit in February.

Mike says he’ll have time to plan for next year during the autumn.

He adds that Council Works Manager Eddie Williams has been particularly helpful to his volunteers and Tresco is pleased to donate their surplus plants.

Brilliant news, well done Mike and well done Tresco. Hope you can do a lot more work on St Mary’s in the coming years, it all helps to give the visitors the right impression of the islands when they arrive.
