Scilly Retains Lowest Unemployment Rate In England

porthcressa from buzzaIt won’t surprise you that, with our small population, latest government figures reveal that Scilly has the lowest unemployment level in the country.

On April 10th there were five people receiving job seekers’ allowance. That’s just 0.4% of the workforce, ahead of North Dorset in second place, with 0.8% of their community receiving unemployment benefits.

The job seekers’ allowance figures are not seasonally adjusted to take account of tourism-based employment.

But the government claims that across the southwest, 2.6 million people are now working and that’s a record high.

Although the data is based on very small numbers of people, statistically unemployment has fallen in Scilly year-on-year by one third, they say.
