Schedule Of Work Tonight Thursday May 15th

Here’s an update on the shipping work being undertaken this evening and overnight, sent to Radio Scilly and ScillyToday by Lagan Construction.

A shipment of aggregate needed to produce the tarmac for the St Mary’s airport and road resurfacing projects will be arriving at St Mary’s Quay on Thursday afternoon.

In order to keep the projects on track this material needs to be off loaded throughout Thursday night (15th).

The cargo of a 1,350 tonnes will be carried in tractors and trailers with each carrying 18 tonnes – that equates to a total of 75 loads. The cargo will be moved at night when the town roads are less congested.

The route will be from the Quay, via Hugh Street, Church Street, the Old School, Telegraph Road, and Parting Carn Farm to the site. The return journey will be the same except that the empty trailers will pass along the Strand, rather than Church Street.

Thursday 15th:

5:45 pm start loading trailers on quay

6:00 pm commence haulage of cargo

10:00 pm stop loading due to falling tide

If the Captain of MV River Trader is satisfied that there is sufficient draft on the vessel at 10pm, Thursday off-loading will not stop.

Safety Measures :

Lagan Construction Ltd will deploy 3 flag men; 1 on the quay side, 1 in Tregarthen’s Car Park and 1 outside the Town Hall. These will be the “hold points” where vehicles will be marshalled so that there are no meetings on the stretches of single line road. The tractors and trailers will travel in 3 sets of 2. The flag men will be in radio contact with each other and each tractor driver will have a 2-way radio. Additionally there will be a mobile escort vehicle which will be deployed to ensure traffic flows are maintained and speed restrictions observed.

Speed will be limited to 15 mph on the Quay and Hugh Street with a maximum 25 mph permitted between the Town Hall and Parting Carn site.

Disturbance:

In order to minimise disturbance the tractors will not use flashing beacons and only full and dipped headlights will be used – not the full array of working lights. All drivers will be told to avoid using horns, not to shout and not to rev their engines unnecessarily.

Lagan Construction Ltd sincerely apologises for any disturbance this essential operation causes and please contact Lagan on 07825 167569 if there are any problems during this work.

Friday 16th:

3:00am – 3:30 am recommence loading

9:00 am Haulage operations to cease due to increased traffic
