A day trip to the islands proved expensive for a mainland woman yesterday after she was caught stealing clothes from a Hugh Town shop.

Police were called out at lunchtime after staff in the town centre business witnessed her in action.

They called 999 and, from the description given to police, PC Mat Crowe was able to identify and arrest the thief. The items that she was trying to take were valued at under £50.

She was given an £80 fixed penalty ticket and left the islands on the afternoon boat sailing.

Mat says this was an isolated incident.
