The House of Lords Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sports has reassured peers that Scilly’s superfast broadband link is on track for later this year.

Lord Gardiner of Kimble was responding on Tuesday to a question in the House from Lord Berkeley. He asked when the fibre optic link would be connected.

Tony Berkeley added that Scilly had “probably the worst and most expensive transport links in the whole UK” and mobile phones here still operate on the old 2G technology.

Lord Gardiner said consultation notices had been issued to the Marine Management Organisation, to ensure the undersea cables can be laid.

He said he hoped that the islands would have superfast broadband “by the last quarter of this year.”

The vessel, Ridley Thomas, has been undertaking seabed survey work off the islands this week.
