Scilly’s Young Judo Stars Pick Up Clutch Of Medals

judo club 2012Young members of Scilly’s Judo Club have returned triumphant from the Cornwall County Championships.

17 children aged between 8 and 14 years old spent the weekend at Penzance Leisure Centre where they secured 4 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze awards.

Lewis Taylor, Justin Jesenko, Kagiso Mompoloki, Ethan Graham, Corey Graham, Keith Guy, Jevon Hughes, Scott Ducker, Fraser Clark, Ashley Horton, Evie Jenkins, Josh Carr, Amber Carss, Phin Austin and Lara Carr all came home with medals.

The Club was second in the overall Primary class and third in the Juniors.

Christie Watt travelled with the party and says she was proud of their performance as the smallest club attending.

The islands’ children were commended regularly over the weekend at the packed venue. Christie says their behaviour, determination and team spirit is amazing and a credit to the islands.

9-year-old Fraser Clark has been a club member for 3 years. He says he wore his gold medal with pride at school yesterday and intends to show it to everyone today.

He says he loves judo because he’s learned good techniques and also some Japanese culture at the club. And he says it could come in handy, “if World War 3 ever happened.”

Fraser says he wants to build on his success at the weekend and help the team to do even better in the future.

Sarah Taylor is now pursuing grant money to support further training for the club members.

She says that they are at such a high standard that they could be eligible for regular training with the national squad at Tamworth and that’s the first step towards selection as an Olympic hopeful.

Well done to all those youngsters and everyone involved in running the club. I know judo has been popular over here for a while, does anyone know who started it and who teaches judo now?
