St Mary’s Golf Club is raising funds to give the clubhouse a makeover and help the sporting development of school children.

Captain Mark Twynham says they’re planning a mid-summer golf festival weekend, starting on 27th June.

The event begins on the Friday, with a four-person Texas Scramble and on the Saturday golfers will compete for the Tregarthen Mumford award in the Open Championship.

Instead of a Pro-Am, the Sunday fixture will be an Am-Am and then the weekend will close with live music on the green.

Mark says the money raised will help update the décor. He says the building is looking a bit run down and needs some renovation.

That will mainly focus on the entrance lobby. He says Fay and Ramsey have already done work to improve the main bar and restaurant.

A portion of the cash raised will go to the Adam Mallon Fund, which underwrites the travel costs of islands’ children so they can compete in sports on the mainland.

School PE teacher Martyn Songhurst says he hopes to get cash support to send a young gig crew to the mainland for coaching and provide sports leadership training.

The fund has also been used to buy equipment like a bowling machine for the junior cricket club.

Businesses that would like to offer sponsorship are being asked to contact Mark at the Golf Club.
