Shoppers in Hugh Town will be serenaded with music this afternoon.

It’s to raise funds for the ‘Keep Smiling Through’ event, being held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and featuring an afternoon tea dance for older island residents.

Organiser Jenny Byers will be playing the accordion from noon until 2pm today, outside the former Blues restaurant.

She’ll be accompanied by a recording of old songs and sea shanties, sung by members of the islands’ Memory Café.

The recording was made earlier this year during the Festival of Light, and features Fishermen’s Friend singer, John Cleave and musician Emma Mansfield.

Jenny’s well known for her accordion playing but it’s the first time she’s tried busking in the street. She leant how to play from her father Freddie Thomas who played sessions regularly at the Mermaid pub.

Jenny says she’d welcome any other musicians who’d like to join in and raise money for the event.
