Scilly Folk Festival Starts This Evening

scilly folk festival 2012The 6th Scilly Folk Festival starts this evening with an open session at the Bishop and Wolf pub.

As always, the event coincides with Walk Scilly and mixes talented mainland performers with the best of Scilly’s musicians.

Popular five-piece Cornish band Dalla return tomorrow with a gig at the Methodist Chapel.

Piers Lewin feels the programme is one of the best ever. He says every event they’re putting on is very strong and should appeal to locals.

New this year is a barn dance at the Town Hall on Friday night, which coincides with the end of Walk Scilly.

Piers’ own band, the Rough Island Band, is launching their new CD at the Old Town Inn on Saturday night. ‘On All Sides’ is the St Agnes-based group’s third album.

He says fans will hear all of the tracks from the new CD as well as some old favourites.

Piers says the festival remains small, but he knows many musicians come over specially for the event and to join in with the informal sessions.

There’s always potential to expand the event if there was demand, he says, but adds that many regulars feel the small-scale nature of the festival is what makes it special

The festival runs until Monday and you can see programme information on the Scilly Folk Festival website.
