Islands Prepare For Walk Scilly Festival

The week-long walking festival has its 8th outing starting this Saturday and it is the second time the tourism body, the Islands’ Partnership, has managed the programme.

Amanda Pender says they were given the responsibility late in the day last year, and this time round they’ve been able to secure regular promotional press coverage since the autumn. That’s raised the event’s profile.

Last year only twelve tickets had been bought as late as three days before the festival. But yesterday, tickets had been sold for every walking session.

Amanda says that is “heartening.”

Organisers have discussed adding additional tours to the programme, to cope with any additional demand.

Amanda says Walk Scilly appears to be encouraging visitors to the islands this year, rather than offering an activity for people already on holiday here. Bookings have benn made from as far afield as the United States and Australia.

This year the all-day walks and the trip to Samson are proving highly popular.

There’ll be a heightened promotional effort on the islands, too. Every Scillonian passenger will receive the Walk Scilly programme and there will be a display in the arrival hall at the airport.

The partnership has doubled the programme print-run to 2,000 copies.

Accommodation providers and local businesses can pick up a copy of the Walk Scilly programme from the TIC, whilst off-islanders can get theirs at the island shops.
