Scilly’s University of the Third Age is extending its range of courses.

Their recent AGM heard that around 40 locals now take part regularly.

The group was established here three years ago and Committee member Maureen Stuttaford says the name can put some people off, because it sounds serious and academic.

But the U3A philosophy isn’t. The international movement mixes learning and personal development with social events.

Islanders with specific skills volunteer to share their knowledge in regular sessions, often in each other’s homes. Their most popular group is currently music appreciation, but courses range from arts to astronomy.

Maureen says she is hosting new, fortnightly creative writing session.

And islanders Alba Williams, Maureen Carter and Linda Wornes have teamed up to learn the Italian language whilst cooking Italian food.

The group has enjoyed regular visits from mainland members here on holiday and Maureen says they welcome contact from any visitors.
