Businesses Asked For Their Views On Scilly’s Future

hugh town from BuzzaToday is the last day for Scilly’s businesspeople to respond to an online survey, which could influence Council housing policy and the islands’ economic and infrastructure planning.

The Town Hall has hired consultancy Ash Futures to question local businesses. Their answers will be used in formulating the Council’s Strategic Economic Plan.

The online questionnaire asks which issues are holding businesses back and whether there is anything that the Council and Duchy could do to help.

There are questions on social housing and opinions are sought on the merit of a new, luxury hotel on St Mary’s.

But a number of businesspeople have told Radio Scilly that they have not heard anything about the survey, as there have been no posters and the Council-backed consultation hasn’t been promoted on the authority’s website.

The Council has not responded to our questions about publicising the survey.

Simon Hooton of Ash Futures told Radio Scilly that they did not think it appropriate to promote it widely as it is a business questionnaire, and not for the public in general.

But he says his team will continue to take responses until Easter and feed views into the final document.

He says businesses that want their opinions to be heard should contact the Islands’ Partnership. They have included information about the survey in an email to their members.

And there will be a public meeting in the next few weeks to give locals a chance to discuss the consultants’ thinking.

Simon says the Council Economic Development Department will be responsible for publicising that event.
