Hell Bay Hotel on Bryher is through to the finals of this year’s VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.

They’re one of four properties competing in the Small Hotel of the Year category.

Manager Philip Callan says the awards are one of the UK’s most prestigious and it’s the second time the hotel has managed to get to this stage.

The first was nine years ago, just after he started working there.

Reaching the finals has been a long process. The Hell Bay won the Cornwall Tourism Awards in November and went on to the Southwest regional heats in Plymouth in January.

They gained second place in their category, but Philip says the judges obviously felt they were good enough to go forward to the national finals.

They’ll be held in Cheltenham on May 12th.

Philip says part of the judging process was a visit from a ‘mystery shopper’ who said in his report that he was delighted that the hotel had maintained, and even improved on, their standard from eight years ago.

Philip puts their success down to an excellent team and always listening to what the customer wants, so they can keep improving.

Last year the hotel introduced a new spa and the popular pop-up Crab Shack restaurant.
