Former Scilly Resident Makes Final Of National TV Cooking Contest

emma evans 2A woman who grew up in Scilly and learned how to cook in her family business has made it through to the final of a national TV competition.

Emma Evans, whose mum Jacky Pritchard, and sisters Helena Plowman and Amelia Mills live here on the islands, will appear in the final of ‘My Kitchen Rules’ on Sky Living this Thursday.

The programme pits six teams of two from around the country against each other, for a chance to win a top prize of £25,000. Each week, the judges, Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton and TV baker Lorraine Pascal, eliminate one team from the competition.

Emma, who now lives in Newport, was representing Wales.

The final was recorded last summer and Emma hasn’t been allowed to reveal the outcome, although she says it’s an incredibly exciting finish to the show.

And she says cooking against the clock on TV really is as stressful as it looks. For one challenge Emma and her partner had to create a ‘pop-up’ restaurant and cater for the guests in just three hours.

There were no breaks and the cameras really did keep rolling, she says.

Emma puts her love of cooking down to her childhood in Scilly and the skills she learnt from her father and grandmother, who she describes as extraordinary cooks.

In fact, Emma says it was her ability to cook an omelette, taught by her late father Tony that got her on the show in the first place.

That was one of the first challenges, which she says she “won hands down.”

Emma says getting feedback from the judges was invaluable and has given her the confidence to develop her catering company, ‘The Secret Supper Clwb’, which specialises in creating temporary restaurants.

She says her appearance on the show is bringing her a lot more work.

And Emma says if there’s an opportunity, she’d love to create one of her temporary restaurants here in Scilly over the summer.
