First Ever Islands’ Rugby Sevens Tournament Set For May

wpgc 2012 rugbyOver a hundred visitors are expected in Scilly for the first-ever islands’ Rugby Sevens Tournament, planned for the weekend after the World Pilot Gig Championships.

Mike Bratt the RFU Rugby Development Officer for Cornwall understands that there can be a lull in activity following the rowing.

He hopes that nine Cornish clubs and workplace squads will come over to take part in 4 or 5 games over the weekend.

Currently two Scilly teams have committed and Mike says a third group is likely.

Most visiting players will come as part of a pre-arranged team, but there’ll be potential to make up sides from any individuals who decide to travel at the last moment.

The event organisers say, as always, the journey costs are the biggest barrier to participation.

Mike’s team is promoting the Scillonian III as the best means of transport and he says they would expect some games on the Saturday, assuming players feel fine after the crossing.

Most of the tournament will be scheduled for the Sunday.

Mike says it is hoped that if the event works well it could become a permanent fixture on the islands’ calendar.

Locals who want to play should contact St Mary’s Rugby Club Secretary Rob Hughes.
