Councillors Vote Through Extra Payments For Transport Committee Chairman

wesleyan chapel 2Councillors have approved an increase of just over £2,000 to the allowance received by the Chairman of the Transport Committee.

Committee chairmen receive an enhanced payment, over and above that normally received by elected members, in recognition of the extra work they do.

The leader of the Transport Committee, currently Cllr Chris Thomas, receives £2,008 a year for his work.

But other committee chairmen get double that, or £4,015.

Last September, the scope of the Transport Committee was widened and the chairman was co-opted onto the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, the group that decides financial matters.

And councillors felt that the Transport Chair’s compensation should be brought in line with the other committees.

But Administration Officer Sue Pritchard said they didn’t have the right to change members’ allowances, and they should wait for a formal, independent review of compensation, due to take place in May.

That advice was rejected by the Chief Executive Theo Leisjer, who said this was just “a bit of housekeeping” and should have been addressed when the changes to the Transport Committee were made last year.

Members voted to accept the increase.
