Scilly Columnists Chosen To Contribute To Magazine

cornwall life magTwo islanders have been chosen to author regular columns in Cornwall Life magazine, following a writing competition in November and December.

Dave Mawer and Juliet May were among several entrants but the two judges – Cornwall Life Editor Carol Burns and Islands’ Partnership Director Alasdair Moore – couldn’t choose between the two top entries.

So they’ve decided both will share the honours of writing features for the monthly glossy.

Carol says they had some great entries for the writing competition but the two finalists stood out.

Not only were they both beautifully written, she says, but the judges were impressed by their in-depth knowledge of the islands.

Dave Mawer, says he really didn’t expect his article to be accepted. He wrote about what he sees during the short daily walk across his fields to check on his cows, and how it links him with Scilly’s past and future.

While St Mary’s restaurant owner Juliet May says she tried to cover the “general loveliness of Scilly” such as knowing the history of different families and recognising children from their likeness to their parents.

The magazine is running a special 12-page feature about the islands in their February 2014 issue and double-page spreads each month throughout the year.

Amanda Pender from the Islands’ Partnership congratulated Juliet and Dave and says she looks forward to working with them and Cornwall Life to publicise Scilly even further.
