Organisers of the first inter-island swimming event this autumn say they’re delighted by the take-up so far.

St Mary’s resident Nick Lishman has teamed up with regular swimming tour party leader Dewi Winkle to host the Scilly Swim Challenge.

It’s being held on September 6th and so far 105 people have signed-up. Entrants will take part in six swims between the inhabited islands, totalling 15km.

They’ll swim anti-clockwise from St Mary’s to St Martin’s and finish on St Agnes. And on the same day there’ll be 10km of walking too.

The event has been created to encourage new visitors to Scilly who are keen on outdoor and adventure sports. Swimmers are being asked to come for the weekend, rather than just the Saturday challenge.

An article in H2Open Magazine will feature the islands and the event next month and Dewi says various partners are also promoting it using their databases.

Currently there are participants from 22 counties and the average age of the entrants is 46. The youngest is 26 and the oldest is 69.

Dewi says he’s confident the remaining 45 spaces will be filled by the end of March and there’s more information on www.scillyswimchallenge.co.uk.
