Islands’ Fisheries Authority Receives Funding Extension

matt lethbridge sea fisheries vessel 2The Isles of Scilly Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority has received funding to continue their operation until the end of 2015.

IFCA Officer Steve Watt was told about the £110,000 grant at a meeting with Defra minister George Eustice in London last Wednesday.

Steve says a total of £3m has been shared between the ten IFCA’s across the country. Our portion is based on a number of factors, such as the size of our area, the length of our coastline and the number of fishing vessels.

Steve says it allows the authority to continue its work protecting our waters, which are designated as both European Marine Sites and Marine Conservation Zones.

The money pays for the operation of the RIB, the ‘Matt Lethbridge,’ and research and enforcement activities.

Steve says he hopes they can generate a small surplus each year that can be put aside to replace the RIB.
