St Mary’s police have cordoned off the beach at Porthellick after what is thought to be an explosive device was uncovered this morning.

A member of the public undertaking a beach clean discovered the object, described as having a military appearance, buried in seaweed.

PC Faye Webb says it is definitely not from the wartime years but it does have danger warnings and an advisory note telling the public to contact the police if it is found abandoned.

Faye says it is around a foot and a half long and the size and shape of a large bottle of cola.

Army bomb disposal experts are flying over to the islands this lunchtime to deal with it. Police have asked locals not to go down to the beach until it is safe.
