Scilly’s Council One Of Few Not To Sign Forces Community Covenant

Armed Forces Day 2012A Parliamentary question in the House of Commons has revealed that Scilly’s Council is one of only eleven in the country who are not currently planning to sign an Armed Forces Community Covenant.

The question was asked by the Liberal Democrat MP for Somerton and Frome, Mr David Heath, back in November.

The covenants are designed to encourage local communities to support the armed services and promote awareness of the issues facing military personnel in their area.

The islands’ Royal British Legion representative, Smudge Smith, says he’s discussed it with the Council.

But he believes that in such a small community, the covenant wouldn’t really make much difference and would be an additional burden on the Authority.

Smudge says he’s always found the Council of the Isles of Scilly to be very supportive of the armed forces over the years.
