Fraser Hicks has become the official face of tourism for the islands.

The St Mary’s boatman, who was also elected to the Council last Thursday, has been selected by the Islands’ Partnership to represent Scilly in a national competition.

They’ve been looking for an ambassador who could go forward in the Tourism Superstar 2014 contest in May.

Fraser will hear whether he has made it through to the next round on the 18th and that could mean a visit to the competition backers, the Daily Mirror, in London.

They will video each area’s representatives for a feature on their website. The contest is jointly arranged by the National tourism body, Visit England.

Partnership Manager Amanda Pender says five people were nominated but Fraser was thought to be the perfect candidate, because he is so passionate about the islands.

Fraser has no idea who nominated but says he’s happy to do it because he wants to spread the message about Scilly being a perfect holiday destination.

He wants people to see that Scilly is open for business and has good transport links to the mainland, following the end of the helicopter route.
