New Independent Person Appointed To Assess Complaints Against Councillors

The Council has appointed a new Independent Person to work with its Standards Committee.

That’s the board that decides whether councillors have broken the rules on acceptable behaviour or have brought the Council into disrepute.

St Mary’s resident Sam Guy will take up the role.

If a complaint is brought against a member, he and the Council’s legal expert, Richard Burraston, will assess whether there is a case to answer before the issue is fully investigated.

Sam says he wanted to do something positive for the Council but didn’t have the time to serve as a councillor. He hopes he’ll be able to draw on his life experience in reaching fair decisions.

Chairman of the Standards Committee, Gordon Bilsborough has welcomed Sam’s appointment.

He says recruiting to this role has been difficult. Some candidates who came forward were ruled ineligible because of family or personal ties to the Authority or councillors.

Gordon says it is incredibly difficult filling a position like this in a small community.
