Scilly Could Benefit From Growing German Visitor Market

hugh town centre buntingScilly should benefit from a predicted 25% increase in German tourists visiting Cornwall.

That’s the view of Niall MacDougall, the man behind Urlaub Cornwall.

The German language holiday website has created a separate Scilly page which usually tops search engine results for the islands in Germany and Austria.

They want to capitalise on the awareness of the region. Rosamund Pilcher novels, set in Cornwall, are serialised on peak-time TV there.

Niall approached the Islands’ Partnership and offered to translate their promotional videos, to maximise their appeal to German speakers.

German visitors are more likely to stay in several places for 3 to 5 days at a time and the aim is to encourage them to include Scilly on their itinerary.

He says he’s found places for them on most of the islands and in all types of accommodation in the last year.

Niall says German customers expect high standards and while our accommodation prices compare well with Cornwall, he feels some properties do need an update, particularly at the more modest end of the market.

He says he’ll continue to work with German partners to promote Scilly.

Niall tried to visit with two managers from a Frankfurt-based travel agency this summer but poor weather meant flights were grounded.
