MP Wants People To Support Scilly’s Local Businesses

hugh town centre 3Today is ‘Small Business Saturday’ and Scilly’s Member of Parliament is encouraging people to support their local shops and firms.

Andrew George says it’s worthwhile reminding people that the success of the local economy depends on how well the businesses on their doorstep perform.

And local enterprises are often so busy getting on with their trade that they don’t have the time or resources to promote themselves like large multinational corporations.

Andrew feels that businesses in Scilly have an even tougher time.

The extra transport costs are a very significant burden and he’s keen to ensure that postal charges don’t disadvantage for islands’ businesses that send goods to the mainland or communicate through the mail.

Andrew says he also wants to see how changes to business rates can support local companies and says the government needs to keep an eye on the levels of regulation.

Mr George is in the middle of a consultation with local companies in his constituency, ahead of a meeting with Business Secretary Vince Cable in the New Year.

He says he wants to ensure small businesses here share in the economic growth and wants their views on what the government can do to support them.
