Surfers Against Sewage Placing Information Board On Quay

st marys quay from mermaidA group that campaigns for clean seas around the UK is putting up an information board on St Mary’s quay.

Surfers Against Sewage says it’ll highlight the importance of caring for the marine environment and its vital links to the economy in Scilly.

The ‘Seas For Life ‘panel will be unveiled by Harbourmaster Dale Clark and students from the Five Islands School next Tuesday.

Dale says it will be placed on the railings near the old quay, and offer ‘noticeboard’ style information to visitors and locals who are going out on the water.

Surfers Against Sewage says they’re installing a total of ten of the boards in the most beautiful and iconic harbours in the region including Mousehole, Coverack and St Mawes.

They’ve got the backing of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation and the Fisheries Local Action Group.

Education Officer Dom Ferris spent time with pupils at the school this summer.

He said our islands children are very aware of threats to the seas around Scilly and can give details of actual instances of pollution, such as the discharge of sewage into the water around Rat Island when the storm drains are full.

He said he hopes the boards will enhance the sense of stewardship that already exists in Scilly.
