Scilly has the lowest unemployment rate in England and Wales. That’s according to 2011 census data just released by the Office for National Statistics.

89% of islanders aged between 16 and 64 years were working during that survey. The average for England and Wales is 71%.

Just 1.5% of islanders of working age were unemployed.

We also had the lowest rate of inactivity. 9% of locals within that age range were either sick, studying, looking after the family or caring or had taken early retirement.

Debbie Rigby is Human Resources Manager at the Council, the islands’ largest employer.

Debbie says the low unemployment rate is good news for the community but can mean that recruitment can be a challenge for the Authority.

She says it become a problem when they are trying to fill posts that demand a specific skill, which might not be available on the islands because those people are already employed.

And the limitations of the market place mean that the pool of talent is small.
