Tresco’s Pub And Bryher’s Hotel Amongst Best In The South West

tresco new inn signTwo Scilly businesses have been chosen as finalists in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

Tresco’s New Inn is one of four licenced premises in the Best Pub category and Hell Bay Hotel will face three competitors in the final of the Small Hotel of the Year award within the massive region stretching from the Cotswolds to the New Forest and down to Cornwall and the islands.

Nearly 350 entries were considered for the awards. And Juliet’s Garden was highly commended in the ‘Taste of the South West’ category.

Finalists won’t know whether they have won Gold, Silver or Bronze until the awards night in Plymouth on 30th January.

Landlord of the New Inn, Robin Lawson, says the nomination brings welcome publicity for the islands.

And as they’re the only pub on Tresco, he believes they have to work harder to cater for the diverse range of visitors to Tresco.

It’s also good for staff motivation. Robin says winning awards, on top of their 15 years of AA and Michelin recognition, helps them to recruit and retain the best staff.

The pub was judged after a visit from the awards organiser and he’ll be back to assess the finalists before an overall winner is named in the New Year.

The Islands’ Partnership says they’re delighted that Hell Bay Hotel and the New Inn have reached the regional finals, which comes on the back of their achievements at the Cornwall Tourism Awards earlier this month.

They say it shows that Scilly compares favourably as a quality destination, adding that industry recognition is invaluable in their quest to market the islands.
