The islands’ MP Andrew George has said he’s “increasingly optimistic” that a new helicopter service to Scilly could start by the summer of 2015.

Andrew says they just need to form a partnership between the helicopter leaser, AgustaWestland, and the operator.

But he expects that agreement to take a few more months.

A site for a heliport in Penzance has already been identified and planning permission will go in as soon as the partnership is formed, he says.

And he expects the service to be within the price range of people who used the old BIH route.

Andrew says there will need to be some public sector investment in the infrastructure, possibly with money provided from the European Convergence Fund and the Department for Transport.

He says that’s only fair, given the public money that’s being put into improving the Steamship Company’s ferry route to Scilly.

It’s taking longer than he would like, says Andrew, but some sectors operate more cautiously than others and they” just need to complete the puzzle.”
