Tresco Wins South West In Bloom Awards

tresco sea garden cottage 1Tresco has walked away with three awards in this year’s South West in Bloom competition.

That’s impressive given it’s the first year that they’ve entered.

Abbey Gardens curator, Mike Nelhams, said they’d never though of entering before because they felt they wouldn’t qualify.

But he says after talking to winners and judges in Falmouth last year at an event where he gave a lecture, they were encouraged to give it a go.

They entered the whole island as a community, rather than just the gardens, and won a Gold Award and the Mary Mortimer Trophy.

That was for the quality of their floral landscaping in the public areas around the cottages..

They also won the London and Manchester Cup for Contribution to Environmental Initiatives as well as an award for Outstanding Horticulture and Plantsmanship.

The judges were particularly impressed with the number of foreign visitors who visited the islands from cruise ships and experienced the British floral heritage.

They also praised the work that the Abbey Gardens do with primary-age school children throughout the year.

And the island’s environmental credentials were considered excellent, including the lack of pesticide use.

Mike says he’s pleased and surprised to win in so many categories especially as they were up against villages across the south west and the judging are so strict.

He says they’re hoping to enter again next year.
