Council Could Start Waste Charges After Weighbridge Calibrated

rubbish dump 3The Council now has the facility to charge for business and building waste.

The weighbridge at Moorwell, which is designed to weigh waste as it enters or leaves the site, has finally been calibrated, meaning it can now be used to measure the amount of rubbish taken there.

It’s been a long process. Councillors wanted it operational in 2006. And the Council’s 2009 Statement of Accounts claimed it would be up and running later that year.

Some Town Hall staff had voiced concerns that the area around the weighbridge needed clearing before it could be used. And there were concerns that there would be a rapid increase in waste taken there if it were known that charging was to be introduced.

Council Community Relations Officer George Pearson says it may be instrumental in the site clearance works.

He says that the Council’s waste consultants, SLR, are developing on a ticketing system for it.
