Scilly Produced Most Waste Per Person in England Last Year

moorwell alp 2Figures released by Defra show that Scilly still has some way to go to fix its waste problems.

The Council of the Isles of Scilly was ranked second lowest in England in 2012/13 for the amount of rubbish it recycled.

We reused just 18% of our waste. Only Ashford in Kent, at 12%, did worse.

Rochford District Council in Essex, which was top of the list, managed to recycle over two-thirds of their material.

Scilly also produced the highest amount of waste per person in the country, at 873kg each year.

That’s 70% more than even the second place authority on the list, Barking in London, who collected 512kg for every resident.

We asked the Council for a comment but they didn’t respond.

Defra says recycling rates across the whole country are starting to level off.

They’re concerned that the UK is likely to miss its legal EU target of recycling 50% of household waste by 2020.
