The Council of the Isles of Scilly has appointed a new Chief Executive.

Theo Leijser, who currently works as Head of the South West Growth Delivery Team at the Department for Communities and Local Government, will take the top job.

Theo has held a number of local and regional development roles in the UK, including Director for Cornwall and Scilly at the former South West Regional Development Agency.

He was also CEO of Forward Scotland, which handled regional grant funding north of the border.

During his early career, Theo who speaks four languages including Dutch, French and German, spent nine years as a programme director for Save the Children in Africa and a year at Médicins Sans Frontieres in Sudan.

And Theo is no stranger to the media. He appeared in a 2006 episode of Channel 4’s Grand Designs after building his own home in Scotland.

Council Chairman Amanda Martin said she’s delighted to welcome Theo, adding that it was a unanimous decision by the selection panel and the whole Council.

Amanda says he brings a wealth of experience in leading organisations through change and development and has an extensive knowledge of the Isles of Scilly and the issues we face.

“He joins us at a very challenging but exciting time,” she said, “and we very much look forward to working with him.”

Mr Leijser said he’s delighted by his appointment. He’s looking forward to working with his new colleagues and the community to build an organisation that provides quality services.

“It is a real opportunity for me to continue to contribute towards the heritage of the Islands as well as their social, environmental and economic wellbeing,” he said.

Theo is expected to take up his role early in the New Year and is hoping to move onto the islands at the earliest possible date.
