French Gig Club Postpones Plans To Enter Next Year’s Championships

gig championships 2A French gig club has postponed plans to take part in the 25th World Pilot Gig Championships, because they can’t get a boat.

The sea runners, who are based in Plougastel, near Brest, have discussed entering the event with Gig Committee Chairman, Rick Persich.

Some of their members have been to Scilly to row previously.

Organiser Serge Santelli says they now intend to take part in May 2015 and hope they can borrow a boat for their supervets team.

Serge says gig rowing isn’t that well-known in Brittany but in the south of the region there’s a boat built by Currah’s of Looe, called the Soazig.

There have been some changes with the World Pilot Gig Championships committee.

Craig Dryden has resigned because his new role as Director of Place could create a conflict of interest.

He’d be the Council contact for the use of Holgate’s Green.

Helena Plowman has also stepped down.

Sabine Schraudolph has joined to take over Amy Hiron’s brochure production role. Sabine says it’s a very important event for the islands and she wanted to support it.
