Three Isles of Scilly organisations are to benefit in the latest round of grant awards from the Council’s Community Fund.

Councillors have agreed to award £500 to the St Mary’s Christmas Lights Fund, which pays for festive decorations to be put up in Hugh Town and Old Town.

Volunteers help with the work and most of the money goes on replacing bulbs, repairs and insurance.

They’re also donating £500 to the Isles of Scilly Folk Club to support next year’s Folk Festival.

They received a similar amount to run this year’s event, which proved to be a big success with islanders and visitors.

The festival will cost around £3,000 in total, mainly to fund transport costs for the artists.

£500 will also go towards bringing the Truro Cathedral Choir to Scilly next April.

Canon Paul Miller says the singers will be accommodated in the community, but money is needed to fund transport and meals.

As well as singing on St Mary’s and St Agnes, the choir is also expected to run a workshop for young people and adults.

Cllr David Pearson said these are all worthy projects that bring pleasure to people in the community, and that’s what the fund is for.

The £3,500 annual fund also donated money to the Vet’s Support Group and the Judo Club earlier this year.
