The islands’ health watchdog says they’re monitoring the growing bed crisis at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, which has cancelled operations this week as a shortage of spaces reached critical levels.

The hospital in Treliske is blaming a lack of beds in other community hospitals in the region.

It means they can’t discharge patients who are well enough for less intensive treatment.

Healthwatch spokesperson, Jane Hurd, says they’ve not heard of any problems encountered by residents of Scilly yet.

But she says the situation is always more complicated for any islanders and they hope that RCHT will make provision for this when dealing with the issue.

Jane added that Healthwatch is keen to hear from anyone who has been affected.

The Council, which has recently taken over some aspects of community care from the NHS, declined to comment on the situation.
