Two days of advice and information on drugs and alcohol is being offered today and Friday by visiting experts.

Following changes introduced by the government, the Council is now responsible for providing public health services here.

The Town Hall has joined forces with the mainland-based Drug and Alcohol Action Team, ‘Addaction.’ who will come over and offer information as well as treatment on the islands.

They plan to hold events every two months in Scilly, during which they’ll offer help, advice and answer questions on alcohol and drugs, including addictive prescription medicines.

Officer Jenny Teagle will also visit every fortnight to work with the Health Centre, the pharmacy, St Mary’s Hospital and Healthwatch.

Adults can be seen either in the Carn Gwaval Wellbeing Centre or the Health Centre and Jenny will also run groups for carers and families of those affected by drug or alcohol abuse.

A young person’s team will provide advice and one-to-one support for children and young people affected by drug or alcohol issues. Their sessions will also include information on how to prepare for the transition to life on the mainland.

The group also hope to recruit ‘champions’ who have successfully completed treatment and recovered. They’ll be trained as volunteers helping people affected by drug and alcohol issues.

The first sessions are being held at Carn Gwaval today and tomorrow (10th and 11th October), from 10am to 7pm.
