Council Disputes Figures On Burial Capacity

old town churchThe Islands’ Council has disputed claims made in a BBC news report that its cemeteries will be full within a decade.

The item, which gave estimates for 358 local authorities across the country, said the islands would run out of space in 10 to 15 years.

Cemeteries in London are permitted to re-bury bodies over 75 years old deeper down to allow reuse of the grave.

Some are calling for this to be extended to authorities outside the capital.

But Council spokesman, George Pearson, said their most recent estimates suggest that the current land available will provide for burials for the next 20 to 25 years.

He added that the situation will be monitored and solutions investigated if necessary.
