Vintage Newquay Invitation Weekend Despite The Weather

newquay gig weekend 2013The man who helped organise the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Newquay Invitation Gig Weekend says things couldn’t have gone better, despite the disruption caused by the fog.

Andrew King, the chairman of St Mary’s Gig Club, says he was delighted with the attendance and the spectacle of the colourful boats, including the oldest gigs still in existence, laid out on Porthmellon Beach.

Andrew says the occasion made a perfect end to the season and he hopes they can do something special to mark the 60th anniversary of the season–closer, in 10 years time.

Andrew says some of the original crew members came over, which he felt made it a very special event.

The poor visibility meant that Saturday’s racing was scrapped but Sunday’s weather was better, allowing the boats to get out on the water.

The visiting crew won yesterday’s race to St Agnes in the Treffry, but Andrew says it was an exciting row that resulted in a thrilling finish.

They last won the Zelda cup seven years ago when he rowed for the Cornish side and he says he knows how much it will mean to the Newquay rowers to take the trophy.
