Prize Winning Couple Uncover Island Family Links

tregarthens hotelA Hampshire couple who won a Tregarthen’s Hotel stay in a national magazine competition have got more than just a four-day break.

Jane and Mark Willis won the prize in Woman’s Weekly in April and when they visited last week they uncovered Mark’s family tree.

He knew that his father was born here in 1909. Mark visited on a day trip when he was 6 years old, but until the couple called at the museum, they had no idea that his ancestors were major players in islands’ businesses in Edwardian times.

His great uncle ran Willis’ drapers, on Hugh Street.

Jane says they were delighted to discover so much of a link with the islands and says the museum staff were incredibly helpful with their research.

Now the couple are keen to hear from anyone with photos or memorabilia of the business that operated from Hugh Street, where the Co-op now stands.

Jane says with or without a family link, they plan to return to the islands again soon.
