Scillonian Sunday Sailings To Return Next Year

scillonian gangwaySunday sailings of the Scillonian III will be operated again next summer.

Commercial Manager Nick Sanders says the ten extra trips have been well supported by travellers and he says the dates and times will be published when the 2014 schedule goes live in the next few weeks.

Some accommodation owners had been worried the extra sailings would encourage people to leave on Sundays, but Sophie Hughes at the TIC says they’ve actually reported more trade.

Steamship Company Chairman Andrew May is pleased that the trial has been a success, even when some people suggested it wouldn’t be popular.

He says the average numbers on the boat have been good and they’ve grown even higher as the summer has gone on, partly due to the good weather.

Issues around staff working time meant that the Scillonian stayed for a shorter period in St Mary’s on both the Saturday and Sunday.

This made the sailings less attractive to day-trippers, although Andrew says some people still made the journey from Cornwall just for an hour-and-a-half on the islands.

He says the company put a lot of thought into the weekend sailing schedule and are now geared-up to deliver this again next year.
