Locals Meet New GP At Health Centre Open Day

dr mike carterScilly’s new GP met patients and locals for the first time at Saturday’s Health Centre Open Day.

Dr Mike Carter was staffing the ice-cream stall at the fundraiser for the St Mary’s League of Friends.

Mike says he was attracted to the position on the islands because he wants to work in a more rural environment following his training in London and growing up in Sussex.

He says our geographic isolation tests doctors in a different way, requiring them to rely more on their training and diagnostic skills rather than technology. And because there’s a small team of GPs here, he expects closer working with his colleagues.

Mike says he’s prepared for the extra work that islands’ GPs undertake, as, unlike his mainland colleagues, here they cover the hospital and operate the out-of-hours service as well.

He’s aware that he’s in a high profile role in a small community but feels that could assist him in his work because it will give him a chance to get to know his patients better.

Dr Carter says he hopes to study in specialist areas while he is here, particularly in cardiology and ear, nose and throat medicine.

Saturday’s Open Day attracted a good crowd of locals and visitors with a car boot sale, refreshments, raffle and bouncy castle on offer.
