Scilly To Feature On Dutch TV

Scilly will be promoted to around 850,000 keen travellers in Holland.

A four–strong film crew, who make a Dutch holiday programme which airs each Sunday on national network Nederland 3, are spending a second day on the islands today.

They’re producing an eleven-minute report.

Producer, Leslie Borgers says the islands are still quite unknown in the country and they’ve been keen to highlight our interesting history and connections with their own country.

Yesterday they shot footage in the museum and interviewed Roy Duncan.

In 1986, as Chairman of Council, Roy formally ended a 335 year war between Scilly and the Netherlands, when the Dutch Ambassador was invited over to sign a peace treaty.

There was no recorded of shots ever being fired although the Ambassador is reported as joking that it must have been harrowing to the Scillonians, “to know we could have attacked at any moment.”

The segment will also feature the museum, swimming with seals and Tresco’s Abbey Gardens.

Leslie says they want to tell Dutch viewers that a place which looks tropical is practically on their doorstep.

It’s not clear when the programme will be broadcast but it will be possible to watch the finished feature online.

The isles of Scilly are truly a wonderful holiday destination i say from experience. Travel tip for my fellow countrymen: From Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) fly to Exeter and from there take the Skybus to Scilly. This greatly reduces traveltime,
