Tresco Gardens To Benefit From Customs Seizure

Tresco's Abbey Gardens

Tresco’s Abbey Gardens

Visitors to Tresco Abbey Gardens will be the unlikely beneficiaries of a foiled smuggling operation.

Curator Mike Nelhams has been offered a collection of rare plants seized by Customs when they were brought into the country without authorisation.

The rare South African cycads, which look like small palm trees, have been kept at Kew Gardens ever since.

But the Royal Botanical Gardens has now offered them to Tresco Estate.

Mike will be going to London to choose the specimens he wants and bring them back to the island.
