Farming Initiative Running Second Farm Open Day This Sunday

The second of the open farm sessions arranged by Scilly’s Farmers’ and Growers’ Initiative takes place on Sunday as St Martin’s Churchtown Farm opens up for tours and tractor rides.

It follows on from the successful event last month at Pelistry and it will also offer a chance to sample local food.

Although Churchtown Farm, a commercial flower-growing business, does let the public tour their facility, Ben Julian says they don’t normally allow access to all areas of the farm.

And he says that although islanders live geographically close to farms not everyone has an understanding of food production.

People don’t always know how agriculture and the landscape works and it’s a chance to find out how the seasons affect the different jobs on the farm, he says.

Ben says there will be a farm trail with an information leaflet so people can explore on their own. They’ll see how the flowers are grown and taste some of the beef that’s produced on the farm.

Tractor rides and a bouncy castle will also be available.

The open day runs from 11am to 3pm and boats will leave from St Mary’s and St Agnes at 10.15am.
