Big Success For Scilly’s Sports And Music Festival

Organisers of the Sports and Music Festival will meet on Friday evening to decide whether to arrange the event next year.

The festival on the Garrison, which featured music from local bands together with sports tournaments, is being viewed as a success and passed without injury or incident.

Around 1,350 adults and 650 children attended the event and, although money is still being counted, its expected to raise at least £12,000 for the good causes to share.

The Rotary Club, St Mary’s Football Club and Cancer Research UK will be amongst the beneficiaries once amounts are allocated to each cause later this week.

Mark Twynham says he wants fundraisers and charity stallholders to report their takings so the final figure raised can be calculated.

The St Mary’s Gig Club say they made £1,100 on cakes and sandwiches while the bouncy castle raised almost £500.

Mark says the car boot sale was more popular than he’d anticipated and he says the expense of the marquee hire proved a good investment on the day. It allowed the bands to set up and make sound checks the night before.

The original Sports and Music event was discontinued last decade because the workload became too great for too few people.

But Mark says there’s been plenty of helpers this time who all took on different aspects of the work, which made a massive difference.
