Tresco To Host Gardens Degree Course

tresco abbey gardens 2Degree students will soon be coming to Scilly as part of their studies.

Tresco will become a specialist teaching base for a BSc in International Garden Management.

Plymouth University and Rosewarn College, part of Duchy College, want to base part of their course at the Abbey Gardens.

Curator Mike Nelhams says the Duchy College felt that an association with the world famous collection would help students who need to foster good contacts with other gardens around the world.

The island’s mild climate also means that students would gain experiences with plants that are unique in the UK and that they’d normally have to travel abroad to see.

The former heliport could be reconfigured as a teaching base for the classes, which would run for a few months outside the main season.

There could be up to 16 students at a time and the first ones are likely to take their places in 2015.
