Skills Funding Helping Islander Diversify Business

lifelong learning signThe Council’s Lifelong Learning department is helping an islander with her plans to become a yoga teacher.

Bryony Lishman has received support from the Council team so she can attend a 200-hour long course in Spain.

The islands’ Local Action Group has funded the course through their Skills for Business scheme, which Lifelong Learning administers.

Bryony applied to the fund for training so she could expand her business by offering professional yoga teaching.

After researching the lessons on offer, she found that the course on the Continent was best. It is accredited with the Yoga Alliance UK.

The funding pot means businesses can receive cash for half of their training travel costs to the mainland, half of the course fees and up to £40 per night accommodation.

She’s had to pay for her own travel on the mainland and to Spain.

Bryony plans to use her new skills to extend the tourist season on the islands and to diversify.

She want’s to run yoga retreats in the winter months at her guesthouse as well as multi-activity holidays all year.

When completed, Bryony will be a fully qualified yoga teacher.
